AeroCatch - Media: Press Release 15/11/2004
The shear pin latch providing a modern solution to panel fastening
The all-new aerodynamically efficient & aesthetically styled AeroCatch has set a new standard for panel fixing in the Motorsport and Specialist Vehicle industries.
“Ever since we began presenting the prototypes earlier this year, customer reaction has been very positive towards the AeroCatch. The aerodynamic advantages and engineered operating mechanism have made a significant step forward in Motorsport panel fastening especially for bonnets as it is also SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) compliant”. Says Peter Boote, Managing Director of Specialty Fasteners & Components Ltd, the Devon based company responsible for developing the fastener. They will be supplied as a kit consisting of two AeroCatches plus all the necessary installation fasteners, panel cutout template & fitting instructions. He also added “Whilst initial interest has come primarily from the Motorsport sector, the design concept has been engineered to provide a wide variety of fixing solutions in such diverse industries as marine, transportation & packaging.
The simple, yet very effective, locking operation evolved after many hours of 3D computer modelling. Production of SLS rapid prototypes proved all design criteria had been met including ease of operation, secondary locking and optional key lock. This extensive development was carried out in conjunction with XAT, the commercial engineering division of Exeter University. XAT were also charged with finding a suitable material that would operate under extreme conditions. “We were looking for a material that would offer similar performance to aluminium. XAT carried out the necessary research in parallel with the Finite Element Analysis and decided upon a lightweight glass reinforced engineering thermoplastic.” Peter continued, “Working with the University has introduced SFC to the latest R&D facilities, the result of which is that we have managed to keep all the specialist development and production work within the South West which is a tribute to how much expertise is available in Devon & Cornwall”.
